As retro gaming continues to surge in popularity, more fans are calling for the return of beloved PSP games. The handheld’s library was packed with titles that offered deep mechanics, addictive gameplay, and portable Bolagila charm—many of which would be perfect candidates for modern remakes or reboots. With the success of other franchise revivals and remasters, the time has never been better to shine a spotlight back on the PSP’s hidden gems.
One prime example is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which already received a modern remaster with Reunion. But there are others, like Killzone: Liberation, that haven’t seen the same treatment. This tactical spin on the Killzone franchise had tight controls and strategic depth that set it apart from standard shooters. A modern remake with online features and improved visuals could easily bring it back into relevance, especially with the ongoing popularity of tactical and top-down shooters.
Another underappreciated title was Resistance: Retribution, a third-person entry in the Resistance universe that brought gritty storytelling and thrilling action to handheld players. The setting, pacing, and gameplay were all excellent for the PSP, but could truly shine on a current-gen system with more horsepower and multiplayer features. With renewed interest in sci-fi shooters, this game could find a second life with the right reboot.
There’s also a strong case to be made for reviving more experimental PSP titles like LocoRoco or Echochrome. These games were quirky, colorful, and focused on puzzle mechanics that offered something completely different from traditional console fare. Their uniqueness makes them perfect for the indie-loving gaming audience of today. As the industry continues to embrace nostalgia, a wave of PSP remakes could offer both freshness and familiarity in an increasingly competitive market.
